Established in 1954, Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology (MIT), Muzaffarpur is a premier institution of eastern India for technical education. It is under administrative control of department of science and technology and wholly funded by Govt. of Bihar. MIT is one of the oldest institutes in India imparting technical education with the motto MIT Motto i.e. work above everything else  started its journey with only 37 students for BTech under-graduate courses in four branches civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering with intake capacity at 60 students each branch as well as 240 for diploma which includes three disciplines i.e. mechanical, civil and electrical branches with intake capacity at 120 students each discipline from academic year 1954-55. Till 1966-67 all branches were kept under single faculty viz Prof S B Sinha . The institute is running now with an authorized intake capacity at undergraduate level at 350+60=410  along with the post graduate course of four disciplines i.e. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering , Electronics & Communication Engineering along with diploma courses in 8 disciplines i.e Mechanical /Civil/Electrical/ Electronics & Communication/ Computer Science /Computer Applications/ Metallurgical/ Mining Management and Instrument

MIT is a pioneer in the field of technical education in Bihar since its inception in 1954. The institute took birth from the erstwhile Polytechnic Institute at Bahadurpur which was started by the late Mahatma Gandhi in 1921 with an objective of meeting the technical requirements of Bihar and to prepare talented, energetic and useful engineers keeping all round development of humanity as a goal.
